Day 9: MEETING IN THE JUNGLE
Transfer to the airport. Flight to Pto Maldonado(airfare included).
We will travel from Puerto Maldonado airport to the river port on the
Madre de Dios River. During our trip, we will make a few brief visits to
the city. We will take a 25 minute journey down the Madre de Dios River
by motor canoe which will bring us to the end of the trail in to
Sandoval Lake Lodge. This trail will take us on a 25 or 30 minute walk
or rickshaw ride through the forest to a small canal. Here we will board
a canoe and then transfer to a catamaran to be leisurely paddled across
Sandoval Lake to the Lodge. After lunch and a brief rest, in the late
afternoon, we once again board the catamaran and set off to explore the
entire west end of the lake. Here, in the flooded palm forest we will
drift along to the sounds of hundreds of Red-Bellied Macaws as they
return to the palm forest for the night. We will return to the lodge
around nightfall for dinner. After dinner we can return to the catamaran
to look for the large and extremely rare Black Caimans of the Amazon. If
it is a clear starlit night, we will also be able to float in the middle
of the lake and marvel at the brilliance of the sky. (L, D)
Day 10: COLPA
After a dawn breakfast, we will return to the river to board the
motorized canoe for the 5 or 6 hour journey (depending on river
conditions) to the macaw colpa. During the journey we continue down the
Madre de Dios River. We will pass small floating communities of gold
prospectors, before reaching the Peru-Bolivia border. Here we will head
up to Heath river, which forms the border between Peru and Bolivia, to
arrive at our colpa lodge located on the Bolivian side of the river,
where we will set up our camp. A box lunch will be eaten during the
journey. After dinner we will explore the forest by flashlight, or board
the canoe to look for Caiman along the rivers edge. We will return to
the camp afterwards. (B, L, D)
Day 11: MACAW CLAY LICK
Before dawn, we will re-board the canoe for the 5-minute journey up the
Heath River to the Macaw Colpa. From our point of view, we will be able
to marvel at the medium-sized, emerald green and electric blue parrots
and the large blazing red and green Macaws that arrive in two shifts to
eat the clay. Note that in some years ALL macaw and parrot licks in SE
Peru are less active in May, June, and early July. After the spectacle
of the colpa, we will return to the lodge for a late breakfast and then
set off on a short walk to observe our surroundings. After dinner there
will be another opportunity to look for Caiman on the lake or to
explore the lodge trails by flashlight. (B, L, D)
Day 12: PAMPAS DE HEATH
After a light breakfast, before dawn, we will take a long walk to the
Pampas de Heath. Here, we will be able to observe the magnificent
contrast between pampa and jungle. In the pampas, there are many
different types of birds that may be observed as well as mammals such as
deer, Tapir and felines. (jaguar, puma, etc). (B, L, D)
Day 13: SANDOVAL LAKE
A pre-dawn wake-up call will enable us to be on the lake for sunrise
and, with some luck, a hopeful encounter with the family of Giant Otters
which frequent the lake and are most active at this time of day. Most of
the fish-eating water birds around the lake actively fish in the early
morning, as well; and this outing should provide excellent looks, and
photographs, of the prehistoric- looking Hoatzins. After returning for a
late breakfast, we will set off into the cool and untouched forest near
the lake to see some towering wild Brazil Nut trees and a demonstration
of how our hosts collect, open and commercialize this important natural
product. After lunch and an hour or so to relax, we will re-board the
catamaran to explore the eastern part of the lake, where we might see
one or more of the five species of monkeys which live in the forest near
the lake, such as the Brown Capuchin Monkey. There is a final chance
after dinner to try and spot some Black Caimans on the lake, or to go on
a short night walk through the primary forest. (B, L, D)
Day 14: BACK TO LIMA
After a dawn breakfast we will take a final, shorter paddle around the
west end of the lake to try and glimpse the Giant Otters before
returning to Puerto Maldonado to catch the flight to Lima. (airfare
included). Upon arrival transfer to the hotel. Lodging at Sta Cruz Hotel
(or similar). (B)
DAY 15: TRANSFER OUT

connection (B)
